How to judge a trading platform

Seven checks that matter, in order — and the three marketing features that matter far less than they look. Do the withdrawal test before the big deposit.

Every platform's own page says it is the best. This lesson is a set of checks you can run yourself, in the order that matters. We are deliberately not naming any platform — the point is to give you the questions, so the answer holds up long after any specific list goes out of date.

1. Who regulates it, and does that reach you

Find the licence on the site, then look it up on the regulator's own register. If a licence number is not published, treat that as the answer.

The subtlety most beginners miss: a company can hold a strong licence in one country through one legal entity, while clients in your country are signed to a different, offshore entity with far weaker protection. What matters is which entity your account contract is with — it is in the terms you accept at signup, and it is worth actually reading.

Offshore-regulated platforms are not automatically fraudulent; a great many people trade with them without incident. But you should size your deposit knowing that if the company fails, there is typically no compensation scheme behind it.

2. Can you get your money out — and how

This is the check that separates a real platform from a trap, and it is the one people run last, after depositing. Before any serious money goes in, establish three things:

Run a withdrawal test. Deposit a small amount, trade a little, then withdraw a small amount and watch what happens. Do this before you deposit anything you would miss. A platform that makes a small withdrawal difficult will not become easier with a larger one.

3. Deposit methods that work where you live

This decides whether you can use the platform at all. A platform that only accepts international cards is useless to someone whose bank blocks them. Check for the methods you personally have: local bank transfer, local mobile money, a card that actually works for international merchants, or crypto.

Watch for currency conversion too. If the account is in dollars and you fund it in your own currency, someone applies an exchange rate and takes a margin on it — sometimes several percent, which is money gone before your first trade.

4. What it really costs

Compare the total cost of a round trip on the instrument you will actually trade, not the headline. Include the spread, any commission, the overnight swap if you hold positions, and the payout percentage if you trade fixed-return products. "Zero commission" almost always means the cost has moved into the spread.

5. Minimums

Two numbers, and the second one matters more: the minimum deposit, and the minimum trade size. If the minimum trade is larger than 1% of your intended balance, you cannot follow your risk rule on that platform. That is a hard disqualification, not a detail.

6. Support you can actually reach

Test it before you need it. Send a question through live chat and see whether a human answers, how long it takes, and whether they answer in a language you are comfortable in. A platform whose support is unreachable when things are calm will certainly be unreachable when your withdrawal is stuck.

7. A demo, and a usable app

A demo account should be free and permanent. And if you will trade from a phone, judge the phone app, not the desktop screenshots — that is where you will actually be placing orders, often in a hurry.

Three things that matter less than the marketing suggests

The checklist in one place

CheckWhat a good answer looks like
LicencePublished number, verifiable on the regulator's register, and you know which entity your contract is with
WithdrawalsMethods you can actually use, a stated timeframe, fees you have read, and a small test that went through
DepositsA method available where you live, without a punitive conversion rate
CostsA round-trip cost you have calculated yourself on your instrument
MinimumsMinimum trade is at or below 1% of your balance
SupportA human answered your test question, in your language, within a reasonable time
DemoFree, permanent, and the mobile app is genuinely usable

Not sure where you land on these seven? Our platform questionnaire walks through them as questions about your own situation — deposit method, withdrawal destination, starting amount, time available — and tells you which combination of features fits you.
